Robben Ford At TPS! [New Pedalboard, Little Walter Amp, Playing Tips & More]
A true guitar legend joins us to talk playing, tone and much more!
Welcome to the show. It is indeed a big day for Dan and I as we welcome one of our all-time playing heroes to Schwangri-La, Mr Robben Ford.
Dan has been working with Robben for a little while now, helping him to get a new pedalboard together for new tones and inspiration.
In this video we talk about his recent playing life, taking in a few choice guitars along the way. Please note there is/will be a separate video in which Robben shows us his fabled Dumble Overdrive Special amplifier and tells its amazing story. In more recent times, his Little Walter 50-watt ’59 model has been taking care of business, as it is in this video!
Massive thanks to Robben for being here, enjoy the episode!
Quick signal path explanation…
Robben’s signal chain goes in the order that you see it on the QMX6 switcher from right to left.
The volume pedal is placed AFTER the QMX switcher and BEFORE the delay and reverb which are not in QMX loops. Reverb is last in the chain.
Guitar plugs into the input of the QMX.

    I saw Robben Ford live in Adelaide, Australia last year. WHAT A TREAT! I’m 37 now, but was first introduced to his music in high school by a music mentor, who lent me his ‘Talk To Your Daughter’. This was the first album I heard from Robben Ford and I loved it! This was a special episode of That Pedal Show, and now I AGAIN have a hankering to get my hands on a Zen Drive 😂 though it might be the Warm Audio iteration. I own the original Mad Professor Simple pedal (discontinued now) which I understand covers similar territory so it’s now going back on my board to play with and experiment. Thanks Robben! Thanks Dan and Mick!

    awesome episode thanks! i would think if robben A/B'd a dumbloid or even a royal overdrive maybe he would like it better than his zen. i have a TC2290 rack and nothing sounds like but it would be interesting to try the new pedal if its close robben might feel more at home with that one and the midi switcher with 4 sounds. 100w dumble episode will be cool coming up..

    I see you made this video 3 years ago which would have been 2021--very informative--I have a similar Gretsch--a Streamliner that I bought because I also have a 1966 6120 which I don't want to risk damaging by playing out with so I bought a Streamliner Gretsch ) So I am in pretty much the exact same situation you were in at the beginning of this video. The Gretsch has limited tone variation and strength- I primarily want to emulate Chet Atkins sound since I play his style on about 20 songs ---So I too just got through talking with and e-mailing TV Jones and sent them Chet's 1957 recording of "Ain't Misbehavin" and they recommended “2 single coil DeArmond pickups with an English mount paired with their r EM1 rings.” ???? I see you play some of Chet's style as well. Are you satisfied with the sound you have for that particular sound ? It's been 3 years. I'd be interested to know if you think for Chet's sound -not the distortion or lead use, if you think it's the best way to go and if you'd do it again. thanks for your very exhaustive information--what a ton of work you did....!!!!

    • @ThatPedalShow
      @ThatPedalShow 8 годин тому

      Hi John, no worries on the lines. No idea why that happened. I think Chet’s sound is more in the playing technique, amp and recording process than it is any pickup, for what it’s worth. Also the rest of the guitar of course which, despite what some people might tell you, is absolutely crucial to the resultant tone. Now I’m not an expert on Chet, but I would say the same thing if somebody was asking me about SRV or Clapton or whoever. That said, there is a palpable difference between the single coil Dyna Sonic type tone and the later Filtertron sound IMHO and I’m gonna say that nobody knows the genre better than TV Jones. I would happily take their advice! I do like the sound of this guitar…. But unfortunately it’s still not a patch on the Duane Eddy model we played in a previous. That may or may not help. Good luck!

I wish I had your patience and skill to do the work myself, but I’m gonna get a Luther to do the work once I get the pick ups and those rings they were talking about??? Thanks so much my friend I don’t think anyone ever responded to a message Message on UA-cam that quickly and you’re all the way across the pond! Amazing!!!! best of luck to you

      Ha! Indeed. I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately. Mick here. Tone isn’t in the fingers and it definitely isn’t in gear. I’ve come to understand, finally, that tone is in the soul of the player, and in the connection to the soul of the listener. The fingers and the gear are either enablers or, much more commonly, inhibitors. Our job as musicians, if we dare call ourselves that, is to allow the soul to speak freely and clear all of the crap out of the way in order that it can. Sound is sound, and it’s measurable. Tone and feel are immeasurable and elusive. I think. :0)

    What an inspirational video to watch on a beautiful Sunday spring morning with a cuppa. Robben has been a guitar hero and tonal inspiration for me for many years like most of us here. Thank you for bringing him on. Can’t wait for the Dumble vid. Stay safe everyone!
